Beyond Sc!ence Magazine Feature

I recently had the honor of being featured in an interview with Applied Biological Materials (abm), a company dedicated to empowering the scientific community. Our engaging conversation covered a wide range of topics, from my journey to neuroscience and experiences in grad school, to my current research and my dedication to science communication.

As a kid, my scientific interests varied widely - chemistry, nuclear physics, materials engineering, and even astronautics. But as I delved into biology during high school, I found my true passion. I was captivated by the complexities of life, which ultimately led me to neuroscience, a field I had hardly heard of until I began university applications.

In grad school, I was fortunate enough to experience a "rotation year," working in three different labs with three different supervisors. This approach enabled me to explore various research methodologies and areas, aiding in my decision to focus on neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases.

Beyond research, I took our conversation to a more public platform, discussing my Instagram channel, @neuroscientist.at.work. Through this channel, I aim to make research more accessible and inspire young minds by showcasing the daily life of a scientist and grad student.

We also delved into my current research, focusing on neuroinflammation and axonal transport proteins. Despite the challenges, especially those associated with working with microglia, I remain positive and hopeful for future breakthroughs.

A typical day in the lab is diverse, ranging from cell culture and molecular biology experiments to dissections. However, I emphasised that the practical work forms less than 50% of my time. The majority is dedicated to reading scientific papers, writing protocols, doing data analysis, and learning new techniques.

The interview also touched upon my achievements, extracurricular activities, and my approach to staying organised amidst a busy schedule. I shared some advice for budding neuroscientists, emphasising the value of gaining practical experience, online courses, and seeking advice from those already in the field.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with The Association of Biomedical Research for an illuminating interview about my journey in the field of neuroscience. It was an enriching experience to reflect on my path, my current work, and my aspirations for the future.

In the interview, I shared insights into my research at the University of Sussex, where I am pursuing a PhD, focusing on the mechanisms of neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases. The Association was particularly interested in understanding what drew me to the field and the dynamics of working in a research lab.

We delved into my career goals, which oscillate between the ambitious dream of opening my own research institute and the realistic aspiration of being a full-time researcher. I also had the chance to discuss the thrill of current projects in our lab, especially the one focusing on identifying potential biomarkers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

In one of the lighter moments, I found myself reminding our audience that despite popular belief, scientists don't have all the answers! There are many everyday phenomena and diseases that still mystify us, underscoring the fact that the journey of scientific discovery is unending.

The interview was a valuable opportunity for me to articulate my experiences, aspirations, and thoughts about the intriguing world of scientific research. I hope that sharing my story can inspire others who are interested in pursuing a career in this exciting field.

I am thrilled to share that the University of Glasgow's alumni magazine, 'Avenue', reached out to me recently for an interview. They wanted to delve into my journey as both a student resident and a Living Support Assistant in the university halls.

As a final year student, I have spent my entire academic tenure living within the university's residential facilities. I have been lucky enough to witness the university's thriving student life from a unique perspective. However, my relationship with the halls goes beyond just living there. For the past three years, I have been serving as a Living Support Assistant. This role has allowed me to further connect with our diverse student community and contribute to their experience within the university halls.

The interview with 'Avenue' was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on my experiences and share some insights about university life that I've gathered over the years. I spoke about the camaraderie and friendships formed within the halls, the challenges that students often face while adjusting to university life, and how we, as Living Support Assistants, work to ensure that the student experience is as comfortable and enriching as possible.

One of my most cherished aspects of this role has been seeing students grow and evolve during their time at the university. Being able to provide guidance and support during their transitional phase has been incredibly rewarding. Not only has it given me a sense of purpose, but it's also enriched my own student experience by allowing me to understand different perspectives and cultures.

The interview also brought back fond memories of the various events we organised in the halls. From fresher's welcome parties to cultural nights and study support sessions, these events have been instrumental in fostering a sense of community and belonging among the students.

Being recognised by 'Avenue' has been a delightful surprise and an honour, to say the least. It's a testament to the amazing work we are doing within the university halls and a reflection of the supportive and vibrant community that the University of Glasgow nurtures.
